Getting Started
Q: Do I need to create an account? No. Expensley works without any account or login. Just download and start tracking.
Q: How do I add an expense? There are two ways:
- Natural language input: Type directly into the input bar at the bottom of any screen — for example, "coffee 5" or "groceries 48.50". The app interprets the amount and category automatically, entirely on your device.
- Manual entry: Tap the "+" button in the input bar to open the full add transaction form and fill in the fields yourself.
Q: Can I use the app offline? Yes, completely. All features — natural language input, auto-categorization, receipt scanning, budgets, and insights — work fully offline. No internet connection is ever required.
Data & Privacy
Q: Where is my data stored? All your financial data (transactions, budgets, recurring templates, settings, and learned preferences) is stored locally on your device. Your data never leaves your device.
Q: Is any data sent to external servers? No. All processing — including natural language parsing, auto-categorization, and receipt scanning — runs entirely on your device. Nothing is transmitted to external servers or services.
Q: Can I export my data? Yes. Go to Settings → Export Transactions as CSV to export all your transactions as a CSV file, which you can save or share from your device. CSV export requires a Premium subscription.
Q: What happens if I delete the app? All your data is permanently deleted from your device. There is no cloud backup, so this action is irreversible.
Q: Can I reset my data without deleting the app? Yes. Go to Settings → Reset All Data. This permanently deletes all your transactions, budgets, recurring templates, and any learned preferences. This action cannot be undone.
Features
Q: How does receipt scanning work? Tap the camera icon in the bottom input bar, then point your camera at a receipt. The app uses Apple's Vision framework to extract the merchant name, amount, and date directly on your device. The image is processed locally and never stored or uploaded.
Q: What categories are available? Expenses are organized into five categories:
- Housing & Utilities (rent, mortgage, electricity, internet)
- Food & Dining (restaurants, groceries)
- Transportation (commuting, fuel, rideshare)
- Insurance & Healthcare (medical, insurance)
- Lifestyle & Other (subscriptions, entertainment, personal)
Income is categorized as Salary/Wages, Business/Side Hustle, Investments, or Other Income.
Q: What currencies are supported? Expensley supports a wide range of currencies. When you first add a transaction, you'll be prompted to choose your preferred currency. You can change it later in Settings → Currency.
Q: How do recurring transactions work? When adding an expense or income via the manual form, enable the "Recurring" toggle and set the frequency (daily, weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly, or yearly). The transaction is automatically created on that schedule. You can view, pause, or delete recurring templates from Settings → Recurring Transactions.
Q: What are budgets? Budgets let you set monthly or weekly spending limits per expense category. Navigate to the Budgets tab and tap any category card to set its limit. Each card shows an animated progress fill so you can see at a glance how much of your budget you've used.
Q: Can I set an overall monthly spending limit? Yes. Go to Settings → Monthly Limit to set a total monthly spending cap.
Q: What are Insights? The Insights tab shows a breakdown of your expenses by category with an animated donut chart, spending summaries, period-over-period comparisons (Day, Week, Month, Year), and personalized tips. All analysis is calculated entirely from your local data — nothing is sent externally.
Q: What are Daily and Weekly Digests? Digests are spending summaries available on the Insights screen:
- Daily Digest — a breakdown of yesterday's spending
- Weekly Digest — a review of the past 7 days
Both show top categories and comparisons to previous periods. Digests require a Premium subscription.
Q: How does auto-categorization work? When you type a transaction, the app automatically suggests a category using on-device intelligence. It improves over time based on your corrections — entirely on your device, with no data ever sent externally. Your learned preferences reset if you use "Reset All Data".
Q: Can I filter and search transactions? Yes. On the Transactions tab, you can filter by category, type (expense/income), and date range. You can also bulk-select and delete multiple transactions at once. Full transaction search (by name, amount, category, or date) is available with a Pro subscription.
Q: Is there a shortcut to add transactions faster? Yes. Go to Settings → Triple Tap Shortcut to configure a triple-tap gesture on the back of your iPhone that can instantly open the add transaction flow.
Notifications
Q: What notifications does Expensley send? If you enable notifications, Expensley can send:
- Daily Reminders — a prompt at a time you choose to log your expenses
- Budget Alerts — a notification when you're approaching or have exceeded a budget limit
Q: How do I enable or disable notifications? Go to Settings and toggle Daily Reminder or Budget Alerts. You can also manage notification permissions in iOS Settings → Expensley → Notifications.
Subscriptions
Q: Is Expensley free? Expensley offers a free tier with core expense tracking. Free tier limits include up to 15 transactions, 10 receipt scans, 15 natural language inputs, and 3 recurring templates, with 30 days of transaction history.
Q: What does Pro unlock? Pro unlocks:
- Unlimited transactions, receipt scans, and natural language inputs
- Unlimited recurring templates
- Full transaction history (no 30-day cap)
- Advanced Insights (Daily & Weekly Digests, all period filters)
- Transaction search across your full history
- CSV export
Q: What subscription plans are available? Pro is available as a monthly subscription, yearly subscription, or lifetime purchase — all managed through Apple's App Store.
Q: Does Pro include a free trial? Yes. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on the monthly and yearly Pro plans, where available in your region (as shown in the App Store at the time of purchase).
Q: How do I manage or cancel my subscription? Go to Settings → Pro, or open the App Store → tap your profile → Subscriptions → Expensley.
Q: I subscribed but features aren't unlocking. Try these steps:
- Make sure you're connected to the internet
- Go to Settings → Pro → Restore Purchases
- Wait a moment for Apple's servers to sync
- If still not working, force-close and reopen the app
Q: Can I get a refund? Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund.
Troubleshooting
Q: The app is running slowly. Try force-closing and reopening the app. If the issue persists, restart your device.
Q: Natural language input isn't interpreting my transaction correctly. Try rephrasing — for example, "lunch 15" or "rent 1200". If a specific format consistently fails, email us with the example so we can improve it.
Q: Receipt scanning isn't recognizing my receipt. For best results:
- Ensure good lighting
- Hold the camera steady and wait for it to focus
- Make sure the entire receipt is in frame
- Avoid crumpled, faded, or very long receipts
Q: My transactions disappeared. Transactions are stored locally on your device. If they disappeared:
- Did you recently delete and reinstall the app? (This permanently deletes all local data)
- Did you use "Reset All Data" in Settings?
- Did you restore your device from a backup that predates the transactions?
Unfortunately, without a cloud backup, deleted data cannot be recovered.
Q: The app crashed. Please email us with details about what you were doing when it crashed. Include your iOS version, device model, and any steps to reproduce the issue.
